What is Industrial Designs?

Industrial Designs are exclusive rights granted to an owner in respect of an article or a product. It may consist of three-dimensional features (i.e. shape and configuration of an article), or two-dimensional features, (i.e. pattern and ornamentation). Registered Designs are primarily used to protect designs for industrial use.

A registered industrial design is given an initial protection period of 5 years from the date of filing and is renewable for a further two consecutive terms of 5 years each.

It is important to note that industrial design registered in Malaysia is only protected in Malaysia. In order to have the design protected in other countries, it is vital to apply within six months from the first registration in any of the Paris convention member countries.
